Public Safety

Police, fire, and emergency-medical services are provided through a unified Department of Public Safety, whose sworn personnel maintain State certifications in all three disciplines. In 2020, approximately 7,463 requests for service resulted in 80 felony arrests and 174 misdemeanor arrests; 2,104 calls were handled as general assistance to the public or general non-criminal; 112 complaints involved ordinance and property-maintenance matters; and 871 requests for fire or emergency medical assistance were answered. The Department operates seven pieces of fire equipment, eight patrol vehicles, and two boats. The City enjoys a "Class 4" community fire-insurance rating.
Department of Public Safety Officers are available by calling 911 for both emergency and non-emergency calls for service. If you are out of the Emmet County area, you can reach our dispatch center at 1-800-577-1911.
