Self-Fire Inspection

The Petoskey Department of Public Safety has initiated a Self-Inspection Program to assist business owners or managers in promoting a safer environment in their downtown workplace.  This program was developed in accordance with the International Fire Code and is intended for office buildings, small retail shops, small personal service shops, and small apartment complexes with three or more units.  The driving force behind the Self-Inspection Program is safety along with the preservation of our Central Business District (CBD).  According to statistics, there were approximately 18,000 fires within stores and offices reported in the United States during the 2018 calendar year.  Just one fire in our downtown is too many, so being proactive is very important.

The Self-Inspection program includes a checklist that covers the most common hazards that Public Safety encounters while performing fire inspections.   Topics include building exterior concerns such as visible address numbers, electrical hazards such as extensions cords, and fire extinguisher inspections.  Business owners can inspect their own building with the help of this checklist or a Public Safety Officer can assist in the inspection if requested.  Public Safety is also available to assist in correcting any concerns that arise from this inspection.  For the complete Self-Inspection checklist, please click here.

If you have any questions regarding this program, please contact our Fire Division at 231-347-2500.
