What is it?
The Petoskey Department of Public Safety's Citizen Academy is a 24 hour block of instruction designed to give the community a better working knowledge of the Public Safety Department's operations, policies and procedures. The Academy will consist of a series of classes, held once each week for three hours. The instruction will be comprehensive, covering a different area of the department's operation each week. Public Safety Officers and Supervisors will provide the instruction.
Who may attend?
The class will be open to all members of the community. Any person who has an interest is encouraged to apply for admission. The Academy is held every fall. There are no charges or fees to attend. If interested, please fill out an application and return it to the Public Safety Department. Applications are available at Petoskey City Hall, at the Public Safety Department, located at 101 East Lake Street or on our website.
The Department of Public Safety's Citizen Academy was created to provide information to our citizens so that they may better understand the operations of the department. It is hoped that the instruction will increase public safety awareness while decreasing misperceptions. We hope to enhance our community rapport through this educational process. The department in turn becomes more aware of the feelings and concerns of our community from the interaction and input gained from the participants.
The Department of Public Safety's Citizen Academy will cover a variety of topics including communications, patrol operations, fire operations, emergency medical services, crime scene investigation, and interviewing and interrogation. Instruction in these and other topics will consist of lectures, demonstrations, tours and hands-on experiences.
