Kalamazoo Avenue Reconstruction Project To Begin May 11

The 2020 Streets Project includes the reconstruction of Kalamazoo Avenue from East Mitchell Street to Jennings Avenue. Preliminary work will begin the week of May 4th in preparation for a May 11th start-up of construction activities. (See below for construction phasing).  Preliminary work will include staking by survey crews, Miss Dig utility flagging, saw-cutting and staging of traffic control devices. The contractor for this project is Tri-County Excavating, LLC of Harbor Springs.

This full reconstruction and utility upgrades include water main replacement; water service upgrades; sanitary sewer replacement; and replacement of storm sewer. Electric system upgrades include duct-bank installations for conversions from overhead to underground along with new street lighting. Street reconstruction includes new pavement, curb and gutter, concrete drive approaches and sidewalks.

The Project Phasing will be as follows:

  • Phase 1 – Kalamazoo Avenue from East Mitchell Street to Hoffman Street. Construction crews will begin work on Kalamazoo Avenue between East Mitchell Street and State Street and proceed south to Hoffman Street as underground utility placements are completed. Street closures will include all adjacent streets within Phase 1.
  • Phase 2 – Kalamazoo Avenue from Hoffman Street to Jennings Avenue. The tentative start date for this Phase will be determined as construction crews complete Phase 1.

Please note: Kalamazoo Avenue will be closed to all through traffic from Jennings Avenue to East Mitchell Street. Construction crews will make every effort to accommodate access for local traffic, which includes all residents and businesses in and adjacent to the project. Local traffic should expect isolated disruptions based on construction activities.
