HELP KEEP PETOSKEY BEAUTIFUL!

It is the goal of the City of Petoskey to maintain and enhance our neighborhoods which takes the participation of all residents and property owners. Property maintenance is an important aspect to sustain home values, discourage crime and increase community pride.  Below is a brief overview of common residential property maintenance concerns and city code requirements.

Weeds and Grass

Allergenic and poisonous weeds should be properly removed and grass must be kept at eight (8) inches or less.

Vehicles

Vehicles on the street or private property (unless stored in a fully enclosed garage) must be operable, licensed and registered.

Trailers and Recreational Vehicles

Trailers, including boat trailers, campers, construction or work trailers are allowed to be parked on public streets for no more than three (3) hours. Motor homes and campers are to be parked or stored in the rear-yard only. Connection of recreational vehicles to utilities (water, sewer, or electric) on residential properties is prohibited.

Garage Sales

Garage, porch, or yard sales are allowed for three (3) days in a 90-day period. Signs for garage sales are not allowed to be placed on street signs, power poles or within the public right-of-way (between the sidewalk and curb) and may only be displayed for 5 days.

Vehicles that are parked across the sidewalk impede pedestrians. Trees, bushes or vegetation on private property that overhangs or interferes with the use of public sidewalks, streets, utilities or parks, or that is dead or diseased and presents a hazard to any member of the public or to property must be removed.

Vehicles are not to be parked across sidewalks such that pedestrians are impeded nor are vehicles to be parked in the parkway (between the sidewalk and curb).

Parking Surfaces & Driveways

Vehicles must be parked on an approved surface and may not be parked on dirt or vegetation in the front yard.

Fences

Fences are only allowed within the rear and side yards; front-yard fences are not allowed. A permit is required before a fence is installed.

Exterior & Interior Property Maintenance

The City has adopted the International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC) which provides for the regulation and safe use of existing structures in the interest of the social and economic welfare of the community.

The IPMC regulates the minimum standards for the maintenance of structures, equipment and exterior property including exterior wall surfaces, light, ventilation, heating, sanitation and fire safety. and roofs. Properties must not present health or safety hazards to the occupants or to neighboring properties. 

  • All exterior walls shall be free from holes, loose or rotting materials and weatherproofed in order to prevent deterioration; 
  • All exterior property and premises shall be free from any accumulation of rubbish or garbage (including, but not limited to, paper cardboard, scrap metal or wood, bedding or other household furnishings);  
  • Every habitable space shall have at least one window that can be opened; 
  • All electrical, heating and plumbing fixtures and wiring shall be properly installed and maintained in a save and approved manner.
