Through the Michigan Public Power Agency, a consortium of 16 of the State's 41 cities and villages that own and operate electric utilities, the City in 2010 purchased 110,617,582 kilowatts of electricity for $6,089,391 and received $9,494,990 in revenues from its resale. Operating and capital expenses in 2010 totaled $10,935,506. The City serves about 5,420 electric customers and owns entitlements to portions of power-generating plants near Kalkaska, West Olive, and Saint Claire. The City owns three substations and approximately 65 miles of a complete distribution system, including facilities at the adjacent Bay View Association grounds and elsewhere outside the City, more than nearly half of which has been installed underground.
