Northbound US-31 Detour in Petoskey to Begin March 18

The next phase of the US-31 reconstruction and realignment project in Petoskey is anticipated to begin March 18, requiring a detour for northbound traffic until late June. The start date for the detour is subject to change based on weather and construction progress.

Summary of traffic closures and shifts starting March 18 are below:

  • North bound US-31 traffic will be detoured up Mitchell Street, to Division Street, Arlington Avenue, to MacDonald Drive and back onto US-31.

  • South bound traffic will be shifted near Lewis St (Sunset Park) and remain on US-31.

  • West Lake Street will be closed at Bayfront Drive, traffic on West Lake Street will need to use Ingalls Avenue to safely access US-31. The intersection of Lake and US-31 will remain accessible to emergency vehicles only.

  • Portions of Lewis Street will be closed.

  • Winter Park Lane between US-31 and Arlington Avenue will be closed.

  • Beaubien Avenue will be open to SB US-31 traffic only. Detour traffic on Arlington Avenue will not have access to US-31 until MacDonald Drive.

  • Central Business District and surrounding area traffic will have access to SB US-31 via East Lake Street or Mitchell Street.

  • Northbound will access US-31 at MacDonald Drive only.

  • No left turns at MacDonald Drive.

  • Recommended route for access to and from City Hall is via Ingalls Avenue & US-31 traffic signal.

The detour is expected to remain in place until late June. The entire project is expected to be completed by late September.
