MDOT Grants Funding for Railroad Right-of-Way Acquisition
Following more than 25 years of work to acquire the downtown rail corridor from the Michigan Department of Transportation, the City was notified June 3 of its award of Transportation Enhancement Activity funds through the Michigan Department of Transportation for the purchase of approximately 1.17miles (399,057 square feet) of the former Penn Central Rail right-of-way beginning at Emmet Street and ending at Rosedale Avenue that has been proposed as a linear park that would include a non-motorized bike trail. The cost estimate for the non-motorized portion of the right-of-way is $506,055, with $354,239 in Federal Transportation Enhancement fund and $151,816 in matching funds from the City of Petoskey.
City Council Meets June 7
Meeting June 7, the City Council:

Authorized the purchase of a latest-production, two-wheel drive, one-ton cab and chassis only, through Mi-Deal State Purchasing Contract from Gorno Ford, Woodhaven, at a cost not to exceed $20,583, as a replacement for Department of Public Works Unit #66;

Adopted Ordinance No. 715 that amended portions of Ordinance No. 674 of the City of Petoskey Code of Ordinances related to Municipal Civil Infractions;

Tabled further consideration of a proposed resolution that would authorize a Termination of Lease and Assignment of Tower Lease Agreement, and Tower Space Lease Agreement between the City of Petoskey and the Charlevoix-Cheboygan-Emmet Central Dispatch Authority for the Krause Road Tower in Bear Creek Township, and that would direct the Mayor and City Clerk-Treasurer to execute said documents;

Further discussed administration and enforcement of property-maintenance issues and directed the City Manager to proceed with development of an International Property Maintenance Code ordinance; and

Conducted a closed session to discuss matters pertaining to possible purchase or lease of real property, and to consult with the City Attorney concerning pending litigation.
