Approximately ten miles of City-controlled streets that are maintained by the Department of Public Works are classified as "major" streets, and more than 22 miles are classified as "local" streets.  In addition, through a contractual arrangement with the Michigan Department of Transportation, the City also cares for the portions of the State-controlled US-31 and US-131 trunklines that are within the City's corporate limits, and that total approximately four miles.  As part of its street system, the City also owns and maintains more than 25 miles of sidewalks, 4,200 parkway trees, 800 street lights, and four vehicular bridges.  Street-related expenditures for 2009 have been budgeted at $2,249,200 that would be offset by $2,287,400 in revenues.
