The Petoskey Marina expansion and improvement project is in progress. Crews arrived on site in mid July and began preparing for construction of a fourth pier and improvements to the marina services building restrooms, showers, lobby, and grounds.
Project Funding: The project is funded by a grant from the State of Michigan DNRE Waterways Division in the amount of $822,000, City marina revenues, and bond sales. As part of the State grant-in-aid agreement, 22 of 44 new slips will be for transient use only and will be available on the State of Michigan central reservation system. The remaining 22 slips will be available for seasonal use.
Early Stages: Crews have relocated the existing marina shelter from shore to Pier A. This has created the space needed to renovate and expand the restroom and shower facilities. In addition to freeing up space on shore, the relocated shelter on Pier A will serve as a shelter and picnic area. New cabanas on Pier B and Pier C, along with the renovated lobby of the marina services building will provide additional functional space. Also, an overlook deck will be constructed in front of the marina services building that will serve as an additional picnic/gathering area.
Early work also has included driving sheet pile into the ground to prepare the site for the installation of a cement lead-in to what will be the new Pier C. The driving of some 200 H-piles will begin soon, these will serve as the anchor and base of the new pier. Pier C will include slips from 30' to 120' of broadside dockage. The broadside dockage will accommodate larger vessels, provide shopping dockage, and overflow space during peak season. Several slips are also ADA accessible. The new pier will also feature a waste pump-out system throughout the entire pier which will allow vessels to dispose waste without leaving the pier.
